Attic and Crawl Space Rodent Cleanup in Pittsburgh

Norway rat droppings measured against a ruler
Rat droppings. In an attic or crawl space, this is what you're cleaning up.

Usually it starts with a smell. Or a yellow stain on a bedroom ceiling. The mice are gone, or mostly gone, but they left a mess behind. Droppings, urine, nesting and tunneled insulation can sit up in an attic or down in a crawl space for years. In a house with a third-floor attic, a knee wall closet or a crawl space under the back kitchen, it's easy to miss for a long time.

Cleanup comes last. Trap and seal first, or new mice move right back into the old nests. If they're still active, start with trapping the mice.

Call and describe what you found. The tech checks how much has to come out and gives you a price before starting.

Third floors, knee walls and old loose fill

Pittsburgh attics come in every shape. Big brick and stone houses in Squirrel Hill often have a full third floor with storage rooms and knee walls. Shadyside Victorians have steep roofs and dormers with seams everywhere. Out in Mt. Lebanon, tree limbs over the roof give mice an easy climb to the soffits. Down in the crawl space under a back kitchen, it's a different mess: dirt floor, low clearance, nesting packed against the joists. Nobody wants to go in there, which is exactly why it sits for years.

A lot of these attics were never insulated right, then got layer after layer of loose fill over the years. Mice tunnel through it and leave droppings all through it. Once it's soiled, bagging it and taking it out is usually the cleanest fix.

You can tell an attic needs cleanup by a musty or ammonia smell, stains on the ceiling below, flattened or tunneled insulation, droppings on the boards and chewed wires near the roofline.

What gets bagged and what gets sanitized

The crew suits up, wets the droppings down before touching them, bags the soiled material and sanitizes what's left. They'll note any chewed wiring so you can get an electrician to look at it. Mice chew wire insulation, and in an old house with some knob-and-tube still hiding in the walls, that's not something to ignore. The tech can't fix wiring, but they'll tell you where they saw damage. If gaps are still open at the roofline or the crawl space vents, sealing them keeps the space clean once it's done.

Don't sweep it, don't vacuum it

Dry droppings break up into dust you breathe. For a small spot you want to handle yourself: gloves and a mask, spray with disinfectant, let it soak a few minutes, wipe it up with paper towels, bag everything. No broom. No shop vac. Keep kids and pets out of the space until it's done. Open a window if you can, and don't stir up the insulation more than you have to.

A whole attic or crawl space is a different deal. That's a job for someone with the gear. And if fresh droppings keep showing up after you clean, the mice aren't gone. Go back to the signs guide and figure out if they're still active.

Crawl spaces under porches and back additions often connect to the main basement. Droppings in both places? Treat it as one job. The basement page covers what gets checked down there, and the pricing guide explains why a deep attic costs more than a small crawl space.

Questions We Get

The mice are gone. Do I still need cleanup?

Old nests and droppings hold odor and can draw new mice. Plenty of people do it once trapping and sealing are finished.

Will they put new insulation back?

Some companies do, some don't. Ask on the visit.

How long does an attic cleanup take?

A small spot, a few hours. A full attic of soiled insulation, longer. You'll get a time estimate with the quote.
