Commercial Rodent Control in Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh's business strips are old buildings packed tight. East Carson. Butler Street. Liberty Avenue. Forbes and Murray. Walnut. Restaurants, bars and shops in buildings that share walls and sometimes basements, and almost every one of them has a dumpster or a grease bin out back. That's a lot of food in a small space.

In a food business, rodents are more than a nuisance. The Allegheny County Health Department inspects food facilities, and rodent activity can get you a violation, or in a bad case, a closure. Regular service keeps you ahead of it. A lot of these buildings are a hundred years old with fieldstone basements, and you can't fix the building's age. You can fix how easy you make it for them.

Call and tell us about the building. The tech sets up a plan, a visit schedule and the records, and quotes it directly.

Behind the bars on East Carson, the bakeries on Liberty

Every strip has its own pattern. The bars along East Carson Street put out a lot of food waste on weekend nights, and rats work the alleys behind them. On Butler Street in Lawrenceville, gut rehabs next to working restaurants push rats into the building next door. The bakeries and delis on Liberty Avenue in Bloomfield handle flour and produce every day, often in old buildings with shared basements.

The warning signs are the same anywhere: droppings in dry storage or under the prep tables, gnawed flour bags, rats at the dumpster after close, holes in drywall at floor level. And the one nobody wants, a customer seeing something.

The first walk-through and the service log

The first visit covers everything. Dumpster area, back door, dry storage, the line, the building's basement, and anywhere pipes or wires go through a wall. The tech notes signs, entry points and habits that are feeding the problem.

Then you get a plan: how often they come, where stations and traps go, what needs sealing and what records they leave. Most plans are regular visits, locked bait stations outside, traps inside and a log of every visit. Keep that log handy. It helps when the inspector shows up. It also shows you patterns. If one corner of dry storage keeps catching mice, that's where the gap is. Old walls and doors usually need sealing work too.

Don't wait till they're in the kitchen. (412) 357-9740

Landlords and old multi-unit buildings

An old apartment building acts like one big house. Mice move between units through pipe chases and the shared basement, so treating one apartment at a time rarely works. Most techs want to see the whole building: basement, trash area, roofline. If rats are digging by the trash corral, yard burrow work goes into the plan. Tenants matter here too. One unit with food left out or a pile of boxes in the back room can keep the whole building going. Good landlords put the trash rules in the lease and actually check.

What your staff can do every night

No exterminator can outwork an alley that keeps feeding rats. The small stuff matters, and the tech will tell you which habits count most in your building. Our alley trash guide covers the outdoor side.

  • Dumpster and grease bin lids shut, and damaged ones swapped by the hauler
  • Boxes broken down and out of the back hallway
  • Dry goods in sealed bins, six inches off the floor
  • Back door closed, with a tight sweep
  • Under the prep tables cleaned every night

Questions We Get

Can they come before we open or after we close?

Scheduling is up to the company that takes the account. A lot of commercial techs work around kitchen hours. Ask when you talk to them.

How often does a restaurant need service?

Depends on the building and the alley. Plenty of food businesses keep a regular schedule. You'll get a suggested frequency after the walk-through.

Do we have to close during service?

Usually not. It's traps, stations and sealing, done around service hours.
